Gum Disease and the Mouth

Gums, teeth, dentures, implants…

The state of the mouth is increasingly important given the our foods and diet, chemicalizing of products, weak immune systems…

Our lips, teeth, and gums are trying to warn us about major health risks. Are we listening?

Is there a more brain-dead time than the 2 minutes you spend brushing your teeth? You stand in front of the mirror, bristle to enamel, foam spewing, with nary a thought in your head. Thing is, you’re missing the most important opportunity of the day for self-diagnosis.

For starters, gum disease, as evidenced by pink bristles, multiplies your risk of developing heart disease by seven.

“Unhealthy gums result from an active bacterial infection, so there’s probably something else going on in your body that’s not good,” says Domenick Zero, D.D.S., director of the oral-health research institute at Indiana University. And research has linked diseases of the mouth to problems in the pancreas, stomach, sinuses, and more. Luckily, your mouth is easier to explore than your organs, and symptoms appear early enough for you to stop the damage.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS, NOT TO WORRY

Dentures might be the answer…

OK, you’ve lost all of your natural teeth, whether from periodontal disease, tooth decay or injury, complete dentures can replace your missing teeth and your smile. Replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health. Without support from the denture, facial muscles sag, making a person look older. You’ll be able to eat and speak—things that people often take for granted until their natural teeth are lost.
There are various types of complete dentures. A conventional full denture is made and placed in the patient’s mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed which may take several months. An immediate complete denture is inserted as soon as the remaining teeth are removed. The dentist takes measurements and makes models of the patient’s jaws during a preliminary visit. With immediate dentures, the denture wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period.
Even if you wear full dentures, you still must take good care of your mouth. Brush your gums, tongue and palate every morning with a soft-bristled brush before you insert your dentures to stimulate circulation in your tissues and help remove plaque.

Can you find your mouth situation here?
I am 52 years old. Upper denture x 6 years, lower x 2 yrs. I am more than healthy enough for dental surgery.
1. Are Dental implants and lupus mutually exclusive?
2. Or could i get a prosthetic that fits over the bone to stabilize the denture.? (I just love the way the bone in the lower jaw just seemed to disappear).
3. Is there a line of denture, or way to make the denture nicer - perhaps a way to pay more and actually get something of better quality. My last doc did a wonderful job, but its time for a different fit and I want to know what my  options could be. …Gloria in WI     (answer)

Happy Birthday, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

Nelson Mandela

South African statesman

Born 1918…

Nobel Peace Prize 1993..

Black civil rights leader, dissident, & politician; imprisoned 1962-1990; President of African National Congress 1990– (ANC); FIRST black President (11th President) of South Africa 1994-1999; Nobel Peace Prize 1993

Through his 27 years in prison, much of it spent in a cell on Robben Island, Mandela became the most widely known figure in the struggle against apartheid. Among opponents of apartheid in South Africa and internationally, he became a cultural icon of freedom and equality.

Here are some of his famous quotes:

For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.
I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.
There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.
‘A Long Walk to Freedom’

A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.

It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people, I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if it needs be it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

I learned that courage was not the abscence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself.

In my country we go to prison first and then become President.

I dream of the realization of the unity of Africa, whereby its leaders combine in their efforts to solve the problems of this continent. I dream of our vast deserts, of our forests, of all our great wildernesses.

There is nothing like returning to a place that reminds unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.

Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.

Only free men can negotiate; prisoners cannot enter into contracts. Your freedom and mine cannot be separated.

There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.

How can I be expected to believe that this same racial discrimination which has been the cause of so much injustice and suffering right through the years, should now operate here to give me a fair and open trial?….consider myself neither morally nor legally obliged to obey laws made by a Parliament in which I am not represented. That the will of the people is the basis of the authority of government, is a principle universally acknowledged as sacred throughout the civilized world.

As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself… Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.

After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.

If there are dreams about a beautiful South Africa, there are also roads that lead to their goal. Two of these roads could be named Goodness and Forgiveness.

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.

Colored foods, cholesterol and blood pressure

Colored foods might help lower cholesterol and blood pressure

I devised a simple way to understand the cholesterol debate - A High H - HDL - is good, a Low L -  LDL - is good.  However, having high lows and low highs - not a good thing for cholesterol.

We should make more conscious choices to add color to our diet, i.e., remember the rainbow in food choices daily.

EatingWell.com  suggests 8 superfoods that might lower cholesterol - and most of them are colored, among which, one is a red wine.

Furthermore, cranberries may help lower blood pressure and reduce brain damage after a stroke.

Starbucks Forbidden in Forbidden City

Coffee, Tea, Starbucks

 BBC reported today that

Starbucks coffee shop in Beijing's Forbidden City

The Starbucks outlet has been in the Forbidden City since 2000

a Starbucks coffee shop operating on the historic site of Beijing’s Forbidden City has closed down after huge protests.

The Forbidden City was built in 1420 and was home to 24 emperors until the end of imperial rule in 1911. Tea was the beverage of choice.

Is this closing a culture issue (the forbidden city is a landmark UNESCO World Heritage Site) or a backlash of the larger US-Chinese ongoing tension due to issues of safety of a variety of products made in China?

The US giant opened its first Chinese branch in 1999 and now has more than 200 outlets in China.

However, the one in the Forbidden City has caused controversy since it opened in 2000.

Earlier this year, Rui Chenggang, an anchorman for China Central Television, wrote in his blog that the shop’s presence in the Forbidden City was “not globalising but trampling over Chinese culture”.  An online campaign began for the removal of Starbucks from the City and obtained over 3 million signatures

Starbucks has defended its outlet, saying the firm “appreciates the deep history and culture of the Forbidden City and has operated in a respectful manner”.

“We have provided a welcome place of rest for thousands of tourists, both Chinese and foreign, for more than six years,” the company said in a statement.

The Starbucks Shop in the Forbidden City is now closed.

Our cells and our cell phones

Is there a link between our cells and our cell phones?

Would it be humanly possible for the more than 2 billion cell phones in use around the world to have some effect on our health? Upwards from about 70 million less six years ago?

Would we care or not if the effect on health is more negative than positive?

Seems that the jury are still out on this.

Information on the Gary Null Show today prompted me to revisit my article of December 2006 on cells and cellphones.

No one can say that cell phone usage has not improved the way we communicate The way we do business all over the world (even the most far-flung fisherman or micro-business owner) is affected and for the most part positively by access to and utilization of the cell phone.

For the cell phone to work there must be access to waves or signals.  In most instances, there are cell phone towers  also called “base stations,” consisting of radios, computerized switching equipment, and antennas that receive and transmit radiofrequency (RF) signals.

Cellular phones, like microwave ovens, radio waves and infrared waves from heat lamps, operate at the radiofrequency (RF) part of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is non-ionizing radiation which is said to be harmless as there is too little energy to break the bonds that hold molecules (such as DNA) in cells together. Similarly, since radio waves of this frequency contains relatively low energy, it does not enter tissues.

Experts (epidemiologists, technical experts, the FDA) and many studies done on humans and animals conclude that there is no adverse health effect from the use of, exposure to towers or cell phones.

Yet, there are some safety measures to adhere to in the placement and positioning of towers.

I believe however that most of the studies were done before the volume of cell phones exploded  to 2 billion and growing (WHO’s study was in 1993).

Most importantly, there was the conclusion, the caveat,  that “cellular phone towers, like cellular phones themselves, are a relatively new technology, and we do not yet have full information on health effects. In particular, not enough time has elapsed to permit epidemiologic studies. There are some theoretical reasons why cellular phone towers would not be expected to increase cancer risk, and animal studies of RF have not suggested a risk of cancer. People who are concerned can ask for measurements of RF near cellular phone towers to be sure exposures do not exceed recommended limits.

And this is precisely my point. Despite the conclusions on no effect on health of humans or animals, we are still told to be wary of where towers are placed and not to exceed recommended limits of exposure.

The Washington Post in 1999 reported onresearch funded by the cellular telephone  industry which suggested there may be a correlation between cell phone use  and cancer, according to the director of the program. The study found
possible connections both in biological tests and statistical analyses  of cell phone users.  READ MORE

Young people are the avid users and devourers of this technology.  Their ears, hearts and minds revolve with and around the cell phone.  If this is not over-exposure, what is.

In addition, a growing number of people rely solely on a cell phone for their telephone service, and many more are considering giving up their landline phones.

Young adults and minorities are leading a revolution in how Americans use their cell phones. People from age 18 to 29 and minorities are more likely to use their phones as personal computers, digital music players, cameras and more, an AP-AOL-Pew poll found.

Minorities were far more likely than whites to use the phones to take pictures, send text messages and use the Internet, though the minority rates were influenced by enthusiasm among Hispanics — who tend to be a younger population.  READ MORE HERE
